San Diego holiday facts
San Diego is the resort playground of Southern California, only 90 minutes drive south of Los Angeles but with a completely different atmosphere. A long sailing tradition, miles of beaches, great shopping and a strong Mexican influence combined with the attractions of SeaWorld Adventure Park and the famous San Diego Zoo have made the city a hot holiday destination in its own right. San Diego enjoys a year round climate making it the perfect place to relax after a coach or fly drive holiday in the Western States.
So what ever your reason for visiting San Diego whether its for business or pleasure, we are sure that we have the hotels and flights to suit your budget and style.
Once dismissed as a slow-growth, conservative Navy town graced with 70 miles of fabulous sandy coastline, San Diego has been evolving steadily during the past 2 decades. The military link is still a presence today, with a handful of large bases throughout the county. Yet the city, California's first and the nation's seventh largest, now hosts a diversity of neighborhoods and residents to rival Los Angeles.
San Diego reflects its Spanish-Mexican heritage in every corner; you won't forget that bustling Tijuana is just across the border, less than 30 minutes away. Despite that city's infamous poverty, San Diego boasts one of the nation's priciest housing markets and a biotech/tourism/telecom economy that's firing on all burners. A full-fledged building boom is transforming formerly seedy downtown neighborhoods and architecturally rich suburbs into upscale wonders. And the stylish young residents and shop owners they attract are, in turn, updating and enriching San Diego's dining, shopping, and entertainment options.
The Gaslamp Quarter has over 16 blocks of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. There's also the Casablanca Lounge for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. You'll find that most of the Hotels in San Diego also have their own resturants at varying prices.
San Diego's cultural scene has never been second-rate, but it's long lounged in the shadows of Los Angeles and San Francisco, content to take a back seat to the beach, the zoo, and our meteorologically inspired state of affairs. But the dot-com wave brought new blood and new money into the city, and arts organizations have felt the impact. The biggest winner was the San Diego Symphony, which in 2002 received a $120 million bequest from Joan and Irwin Jacobs, the largest single donation to any symphony ever. The city's opera, live theaters, and other arts organizations are also thriving as new ears and eyes claim San Diego's art scene as their own.
But don't think "after dark" in this city is limited to highfalutin affairs for the Lexus crowd, it also means night lively: rock and pop concerts, trendy martini bars and nightclubs, and dinner-and-dance cruises on the bay. You'll find fine outdoor concert venues that take advantage of our balmy weather, plus several choice indoor clubs.
Known for it's near-idyllic climate, 70 miles of pristine beaches and dazzling array of world-class family attractions, including the world-famous San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park, SeaWorld San Diego and LEGOLAND California, San Diego offers a wide variety of things to see and do, appealing to guests from around the world
